You might as well change the order of the clauses as follows. / 竹は、6週間以内に90フィートの高さまで急速に成長する前は、地下で〔ひたすら〕広範なルートシステムを構築しているため、最初の5年間はほとんど見えません。/ I suppose this is more natural.

You could say as you did above, though some people might feel it a bit weird because it sounds like you can hardly ever see bamboos not because they are just building their root systems under the ground for a long time but because they grow very fast in such a short period as six weeks.
