What does "to dust 'em off" mean? What does it exactly mean "to dust 'em off"? Generally, the phrasal verb "to dust off" means to clean something of the dust specks; the p.verb "to dust somebody off" means to beat or kill somebody. But recently I've met the p.verb "to dust 'em off" in meaning not to beat or kill "them", but to remember the past, more or less recent; or revive the olden times. But I'm not sure wether this translation is right or not. So could you tell me, please, is this one correct?

More or less. This usage is basically a variation on the first one, "to clean." It suggests that a thing, skill, or memory has been unused and "collecting dust" for a long time, and you need to "dust it off" before you use it. --A: "Do you want to go throw a ball around in the yard?" B: "Well, it's been a while since I've done it, but I guess I could dust off the old baseball glove." [Note: in thisuse, it is often joking or deceitful. It is quite probable that B plays baseball every day, but he wants A to underestimate him.] --I spent the afternoon with my grandmother, dusting off her old memories of her childhood. --A: Do you still play the piano? B: Well, I guess I could dust off my piano skills and give it a try [again, it is highly probable that this is false modesty]

I have never heard of the phrase 'to dust someone off' meaning to kill someone. Some 3xamples of what you asked: But yes, let me dust off the computer and start writing emails to you. (I am doing you a favour...I don't normally write emails.) Let me dust off the old cricket ball and give it a throw or two. (I haven't done it for a long time, but would like to remember those good times when I did.) Etc

# To Karen: I've got a community notification that Karen answered this question. But inside the topic there's no Karen's answer. Karen, if you really answered me and did not eleminate your text, it means you're banned, and your account is invisible now. Whatever you would done -- answer questions, correct texts or write messages to other people, nobody won't see you. The negotiations with the Italki administration are likely useless by my experience. So I advice you to create a new account.

# Chris Tooze, okay, I'll try not to use this expression in the second meaning unless necessary 😋 Thank you! 👍 # Ueda, I hope, the habitant of that lamp yet did not swear to dust his savior off! 😏

I am really impressed that you guessed right from the context. Imagine what you would do first when you found an antique lamp and wanted to use it again. It must be covered with a lot of dust.
