N が あります/ います means "there is/there are". In Japanese there is not a clear difference between singular and pluraral. You need to use counters to make it clear. You can also use -たち like for example: 人たち、わたしたち。
1. N が あります is used for objects
Example テブルのうえにペンが三本あります。
2.N が います is used for living things, i.e people and animals。
Example あそこに男がさんにんいます。(there are 3 men there)
