the Shang Dynasty or Shang Dynasty
Hello,
The first embroidered item appeared in the Shang Dynasty.
The first embroidered item appeared in Shang Dynasty.
My question is about the use of the definite article THE in the above two sentences. I'm sure that the first sentence is correct. I don't know why the second sentence is incorrect. I noticed that there is an article titled Shang Dynasty without THE. So the second sentence might also be correct.
How do your think about it?
Thank you.

Hi, Sanya!
The first sentence is correct, and the reason the definite article is used in front of "Shang Dynasty" is because "Shang Dynasty" is a particular noun. For a list of conditions on when to use the definite article, you can read through this link:
https://www.ef.edu/english-resources/english-grammar/definite-article/
The second sentence would only be correct if the noun wasn't referring to a particular time period. For example, if it said: "The first embroidered item appeared in ancient times," it would be correct to not include the definite article because "ancient times" is a general time period.
I hope this helps. 如果不懂的话,请告诉我。我也可以用中文帮你解释。
