By saying "a dessert" it means "a kind of desert", right?

Don't be confused. Desert refers to the sand dunes like in middle eastern regions. A dessert generally refers to something sweet that you eat after a main meal example cakes or icecream. Anyway to your question, yes a dessert refers to a kind of dessert, and not desert. Similar spelling, completely different meaning.
