Both words mean 'spread', and is there a difference between them? Thanks!

Both words translate to “spread”, but they have a different meaning in Dutch. As our trusty Van Dale dictionary tells us:
So in short:
Verspreiden: to spread out in large areas.
Spreiden: to spread out related to time, aka spread out payments for example, or spreading to a flat surface, like laying out a rug in the floor.
