Tutor della CommunityRussian: Listening to the Radio
Have I translated my American English to Russian correctly, does it sound natural, and is the word order correct too?
Their father listens to the radio in the kitchen every morning.
= Каждое утро, их отец слушает радио на кухне.
*** Also... in Russian, is "radio" actually a direct object? Apparently in English, it is actually an indirect object. So it seems like our two languages assign a different grammatical role to "radio" here. Hmmm.

That's when they talk about ' listen" You can just listen.( without direct object) I am listening carefully. In this case it's intransitive

Hi Shawn!
You can talk about natural word order only in Context. Otherwise any word order in Russian is correct , but will be natural only within a certain context.

Радио is a direct object both in English and Russian. Listen is intransitive, 'Listen to' is a transitive phrasal verb and has to be complemented with a direct object. When you give something TO someone that's indirect object. In Russian we are more consistent with the idea of showing indirect or direct object.

That sounds ok! I am very happy for you! Yes it's a direct object.
