The meaning of "Cornucopias in black straw"?
I'm reading "Cards on the Table" written by Agatha Christie, and this is the paragraph:
Mr Shaitana was diverted for a moment by a Lovely Young Thing with tight poodle curls up one side of her head and three cornucopias in black straw on the other.
I don't understand how he/she looks like..
Thank you

Ciao,
A cornucopia is also called the 'Horn of Plenty': corno+copia(=richezza). There's a clip-art picture here:

So you get an idea of how her hair was gathered on one side (in 3 horn-shapes). And on the other side of her head, the hair hung loose but curly, like the curls on a poodle dog.
Hope this helped!

Hello Nophiq,
A cornucopia of things is a large number of different things.
It means she has got three sets of curls in many numbers.
A 'straw' Straw consists of the dried stalks from crops ,they are colored and used to make hats or as hair ornaments. In your sentence the 3 sets of abundant curls are gathered in a black straw.
It seems elegant , lovely and attractive to look at since the guy was diverted by her appearance.
