actually..we often use "牛" instead of "牛逼". in my opinion,牛逼 is just a word of dialect,it is often used in spoken Chinese. when we found somebody did something very well, we would use this word. when we want to appriciate somebody or something, we would use this word. just like this. 哇！你的分数这么高，你真是太牛逼了。太牛了！ 牛逼 just like 强大. if you have heard of this phrase, I think you will understand it better! on the Internet, when people saw something wonderful,they will say"很好很强大". it's just like 牛逼.but this phrase is only used on the Internet.

You can treat 牛逼 as 'awesome'. an adjective. A 牛逼 person or thing is very impressive. 牛 means bulls, 逼 actually is a verb means 'to force, to compel', You can imagine how the bull will be when being forced. (This is my own opinion) It's usually used in such occasion: when encountering a pro in an on-line game, you can say what a 牛逼 player he/she is。 Or someone did an incredible thing, for example, He walked across the half American within 2 days. You can use 牛逼 to describe him or the thing he has done.
