remembering the kanji yes, it's a great book and a way to remember. But when trying to recognise or make compound word should person rely on logical thinking or memory?

No no no no no no no. You clearly haven't read the book! You rely on your imagination. You must create each story in your mind. It is that that you will remember! You cannot remember logical abstract thinking!
