The trouble with Ulysses

My teenage pupil had to prepare Joyce's Ulysses on his own as his teacher was "<em>too busy to do that</em>". Typical!

First I tried to evaluate how much of the book he actually needed to know, then I revised some of it myself and discussed the main themes and stylistic features with him. I managed to present the topic in a thoughtful but (hopefully) not boring manner and he seemed to get most of it confidently.

I obviously hope he'll get a good mark in his final presentation in July.

Etruscans and Italian identity

As children we were taught that our sole ancestors were the Romans, and that the Romans had nothing in common with their neighbours in Central Italy, i.e. the Etruscans.

The Etruscans were supposed to be a mysterious population with an incomprehensible language and exotic, rather Middle-Eastern culture. All in all, they weren't worthwhile and they disappeared almost magically, just before Rome's Great Period.

My research is leading me elsewhere, though...

Dubliners

What a bizarre idea for a teacher to have her students read Joyce's 'Dubliners' without the slightest introduction or commentary!

Yet this is what happened to a student of mine. His class were only told it was a collection of short stories and that's that. Not that it's Joyce's most difficult work but I feel a preparatory, if short, explanation was needed all the same.

Of course you can read 'Dubliners' with a fresh mind, but still...

'Skype teaching'

How different it is to have lessons via Skype! As an experienced "traditional" teacher, I found it unsettling to have to speak to a screen at first, even though the human voice is there at the other end, if a little computerized.

Don't you share my point of view?

English through movies - "Spider"

Yesterday a teenage student and I finished watching David Cronenberg's movie "Spider", which triggered an avalanche of doubts and questions about its ultimate meaning.

If you've seen it too, maybe you can help us. The student said he'd been flabbergasted by the last scene and, in all honesty, it does shed a different light on the story.

Why do you think a single actress (Ms Richardson) was cast in three different roles? I've got my point of view but I'd like to know yours.

Coleridge

One of today's lessons was on the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", part six of it, to be precise. I preferred not to go into too much detail with my student as far as metaphors and allegories are concerned and only outlined the 'plot' , which is quite complex in its own right.

Coming across the figures of the Pilot, the Pilot's Boy and the Hermit I was unable to give him and myself a satisfactory interpretation, though. What are they, sentinels, symbols for ordinary people, parts of Coleridge's personal mythology? Hard to say...
