Hi! My name is Taraneh. I’m from Iran and have been living in the US & Canada for the past decade. I currently live in Montreal where I’m the director and professor of the Persian program at McGill University.
I’ve received my PhD in Linguistics from the University of Illinois and have a Master’s in Language Education from Tehran University.
I’ve been teaching different levels and types of Persian courses in North American universities since 2016. Throughout my professional/academic career, I’ve had the joy of teaching students from all kinds of backgrounds, whether heritage speakers or those discovering Persian for the first time. Years ago, my passion for language teaching made me change my career path from being an engineer to a highly professional language teacher and linguist. Best decision of my life! My diverse experience with different students, learning materials, and topic courses allows me to help my students find, and stick to, what works for them depending on their interests and learning goals. I believe that language and culture are intertwined, so I always teach language through interacting with culture, be it more on the ‘traditional’ side (e.g. literature, proverbs) or on the more ‘modern’ side (e.g. following social media trends). My teaching style is always tailored to my students’ interests and learning objectives as I create a personalized plan for each student. For a general course, that would involve learning Persian vocabulary, grammar, and reading/writing/listening/speaking skills, I usually draw on a variety of different textbooks to create a basic structure for the course and then complement this with various fun multimedia authentic materials (e.g. music, podcasts, news, poems, stories, movies, memes, etc.) and online resources depending on the student’s proficiency level and their interests. Additionally, I take time to create and give feedback on assignments between sessions. We’ll find what works for you!Il mio materiale didattico

I've been taking classes with Dr. Taraneh for almost a year now and they have been very helpful for my Farsi -- she has been great at targeting the lessons to my level and experience, and balancing introducing new concepts with reinforcing known material. For me they are a mix of question and answer, speaking practice, and learning new grammar or vocab, with great context and examples provided. She is a very patient and encouraging teacher and has helped me identify where I'm making mistakes and how to fix them, and she provides helpful resources and exercises to help me learn. I definitely have become more confident when speaking, writing, and listening to Farsi and I'm able to put together much more complex and varied sentences and talk about a wider range of topics compared to where I was last year. I would definitely recommend Dr Taraneh as a teacher, both to beginners who want to learn Farsi, or students who have experience but want to improve further.

Learning a new alphabet/script has never been so much fun and without major difficulty! This teacher is absolutely excellent! I cannot recommend her enough.

Her class is well-structured with a good balance of freeform speaking practice, learning new concepts, and doing exercises to cement learnings.
I highly recommend Dr. Taraneh if you are looking to learn Farsi!

Taraneh is a superb language educator! She is really great at helping me understand concepts and can even anticipate my questions because she understands my learning style. The pace is great and she has useful out of class assignments that help me practice and prepare for my next class. FIVE STARS!

Dr. T is great at adjusting to my varying levels of adult-learner enthusiasm. One week I'm slow and dumb and ill-prepared and she plans something that makes me feel smart. The next week I'm prepared and killing it and she is so proud of me. She's fun and we laugh and she makes learning Farsi feel (slightly) less daunting. Mersi Dr. T!
