Hi, I'm Kai, a Chinese teacher from China living in Minnesota since 2018. I love traveling, and I've visited 25 states. I've also lived in Russia for two years, teaching Chinese and exploring different cities. I speak Mandarin, English, Russian, some Spanish, and a little French. I believe learning languages is an excellent way to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, biking, singing, and meeting new people. I'm open-minded and believe anyone can learn a new language with the right approach. I am an experienced certified Chinese teacher with a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. I have been teaching Chinese in various settings since 2015, including in-person and online classes in China, the US, and Russia. In the US, I have taught at high schools and universities, focusing on all four skills. I also developed and taught an online Chinese course. In Russia, I taught Chinese to nearly 130 undergraduates and graduate students from various countries. I have also taught Chinese at Jilin University and as part of the "Online Chinese Teachers" program. My teaching materials are varied, and I make use of technology to enhance the learning experience. Every student is unique, so I personalize my teaching methods to meet their needs. I'm passionate about teaching Chinese and believe language learning is also about understanding cultures. CTCSOL (国际汉语教师证书) - Center for Language Education and Cooperation - 2020The Certificate for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages validates the holder's competence and proficiency in teaching Chinese to non-native speakers. To obtain it, one must: Possess a bachelor's degree or above from an accredited institution; Have at least 2 years of Chinese language teaching experience or equivalent; Successfully complete the CTCSOL training program; Pass the CTCSOL exam, which assesses the candidate's knowledge of Chinese language teaching theory and pedagogy.

Chinese InstructorTaught a Chinese course catering to students from Apollo High School and St. Cloud State University in MN, achievin a 100% pass rate in HSK levels 3, 4 and 5. With a particular emphasis on reading and writing, my curriculum also featured individual and group activities, including speaking and listening exercises, to enhance student engagement and participation. By designing the course from scratch, I was able to employ innovative teaching methods and cultivate an effective learning environment.

Co-instructor of ChineseCo-taught Chinese classes at St. Cloud State University (SCSU), in collaboration with Winona State University (WSU) via video conferencing. Under the guidance of Dr. Weidong Zhang, the lead professor from WSU, I delivered comprehensive instruction across three levels: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I also provided individualized Chinese tutoring sessions to students at SCSU, further enhancing their language proficiency and academic success.

Instructor/Professor of ChineseTaught Chinese at Southwestern State University’s Department of Languages and Department of International Relations for 2 years while working on my Master’s degree. Taught a total of 12 different groups over the 2-year period, with a total of nearly 130 undergraduates and graduate students from Russia, Central Asia and Japan across all proficiency levels. The classes were focused on all four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Over 80% of students passed HSK levels 1 through 5.

I have been taking lessons with Kai twice a week for several months now. I am relatively new to Mandarin, and Kai's support has been indispensable as I have slowly built up my knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. Kai is very patient and takes the time to explain everything very thoroughly. Just as importantly, his encouraging attitude makes it easier to learn, which can only happen if you make (many) mistakes. In short, Kai is a wonderful instructor and I would recommend him highly to anyone, regardless of their proficiency level.
