The theme for today’s lesson was favorite or interesting recipes for Italian dishes. That led us into a conversation about my grandmother‘s meatballs and my efforts to learn how to prepare them well and also teaching my grandchildren to make them with me. It sounds like a simple recipe for a lesson and turned into an interesting conversation about how the dishes that we love are more than just about feeding our bodies. I say all this because it illustrates how well Alessandra uses a theme to create a deeper conversation than simply talking about the weather or the news. She is also very good at encouraging me to use the themes to share stories. For me, this is how to develop a real fluency with the language.

Alessandra is an excellent teacher. She is relaxes, engaged, knowledgeable,and conversational. She is genuinely interested in our discussion and curious about what I have to say. She creates a theme for the lesson that gives us a focal point and gets me to think about and express ideas that aren’t always top of mind. For example, in our previous lesson, we talked about a famous Sicilian legend. In today’s lesson we discussed several American legends.

I especially appreciate Alessandra for today’s lesson. My brain was foggy and I was struggling at times to form sentences that made sense 😁. I was having trouble following my own train of thought. But Alessandra hung in there with me and patiently and calmly helped me with vocabulary and using bello/bella before a verb.

My second lesson with Alessandra was even better than the first. It was easy for us to jump right into our conversation and the time flew by. Alessandra asks good questions and her suggestions and corrections don’t interrupt the flow of our chat. I also like that she expands my cultural knowledge and uses that to build on our conversation.
