Carl was incredibly attentive, patient, and kind. I shared a scene from my novel with him, and as a fellow writer, he pointed out several directions in which the story and characters could be explored more deeply—possibilities I had never considered before. Rather than simply telling me what could be improved, he asked thoughtful questions that encouraged me to see my own story from new perspectives. We also had a fascinating conversation about mental health and creative writing. It gave me an opportunity to reflect on how my experiences have shaped my creative instincts and the kind of writer I have become. I came away from the lesson with new ideas for my novel as well as a deeper understanding of my own writing process. It was a genuinely inspiring conversation.
