it was only a trial lesson, but it was so nice speaking with emma! besides being lovely and personable, she had an instant sense of my ability and was able to match me where I was, while providing lots of new vocabulary and reinforcing proper sentence structure

I highly recommend Emma as a teacher of Mandarin Chinese. At the time of writing this I've studied with Emma for about 3.5 years and have found her teaching to be of a consistently high standard over that time. As well as enthusiasm for teaching and learning languages, Emma has a lot of teaching experience and this shows in how she has been able to adapt her classes to my goals, level, learning style, and to help me overcome those 'sticking points' of understanding that occasionally come up when learning a language. With the number of teachers on Italki it can be difficult to decide who to begin lessons with and take that first step. I think if you book a lesson with Emma, you will discover for yourself how good she is. My Chinese has certainly improved as a result of these classes, and I have no hesitation in recommending her to you.
