Hi!
I’m a globetrotting English teacher with a passion for storytelling—both in the classroom and on the page. When I’m not teaching academic writing or critical reading (my specialties!), I write creative nonfiction about life abroad. Want a taste? Check out my podcasts. I´m also working on a novel about the American invasion of the colonies of Canada in 1812. From Canadian army reserves to supply chain inventory management, my unconventional path fuels my teaching: I help students turn ideas into powerful writing. I have over 30 years of teaching experience mostly to adults and older teenagers.
I am a trained and certified secondary school social studies teacher and in addition to teaching English have taught history, AP Human Geography and philosophy.
I spent ten years teaching in secondary schools in the Czech Republic and Bolivia.
I spent five years teaching academic essay writing at KFUPM in Dharan in Saudi Arabia.
My passion is in teaching writing both creative short stories and academic essays. I also enjoy teaching critical reading comprehension skills.

My lessons are customized to your needs. I won't push something on you that you already know or don't want. I am a facilitator. I use a Socratic method of teaching where I ask questions and use your answers to guide what I teach and help you learn. Our sessions will be interactive where I encourage you to ask me questions. I don't just hand out answers but help you to find them. I support my teaching with videos, interactive websites, visuals and quizzes.
Your reading and writing are done outside of class time. During class, I will check your work with you.
Whatever we do is focused on your needs.

English TeacherHere on Italki, I have guided adults to improve their English for the workplace, job interviews, test preparation, and conversation. Typically, my test prep students score IELTS 7 or better the first time they do the test. They succeed because I coach them to think, speak and write in English and to stop translating. During this time, I teach from my ebook, "Writing Attention-Getting Paragraphs." In 2022, I was in the top 1% group of English teachers here in Italki.

Buyer Expeditor Inventory ManagerI started in the warehouse with various inventory duties. I was promoted to a clerical cost control position in the purchasing department. I spent the last six years in purchasing and inventory management.

Reservist Noncommissioned OfficerI started as an artillery gun crew member. Promoted regularly, I rose to the rank of sergeant. In this capacity, I ran the technical section and taught new technicians to calculate firing data. In the field, I was the Battery Commanders technician: "5th (BC) Field Battery Royal Canadian Army." I served in order to pay for my college and university studies.

I would like to recommend lessons with Ralph. We work together for over a year and it was a very inspiring time. Ralph is using many tools, so our meetings were always interesting and focused on my needs.
