My name is Valeria and I am a professional Italian Teacher. I hold a CEDILS certificate to teach Italian to foreigners, a Ph.D in Asian Studies and I have over 10 years of teaching experience both in person and online.
I have specialised in teaching to Chinese speakers who wish to study in Italy, to European professionals who work for Italian companies, and to retirees passionate about culture and travels.
I have a solid knowledge of teaching methodologies that I developed through my experience as a lecturer in China and in the UK. I learnt how to design new courses according to students’ feedback while making sure that they are clear and comprehensive.Le mie lezioni e il mio metodo di insegnamento
I adapt my lesson according to your interests and needs. In every lesson you will find something interesting and stimulating.
I teach general, academic and business Italian. I can also help you prepare for language exams.
My communicative approach allows the students to speak without inhibitions. I use authentic materials which reflect different aspects of everyday life.
I usually start with a written text, a video, or an audio recording, then I focus on vocabulary and grammatical analysis. Finally, with a role play you will be asked to “act” in a simulated situation according to the topic just studied.

Laurea specialistica - Comparative StudiesI graduated in Comparative Studies (Chinese and English) with 110 cum laude. I discussed a thesis about the poetic and narrative works of Hai Nan, a contemporary Chinese writer.
2006 - 2010
Dottorato - Asian StudiesOn May 2010 I defended my doctoral thesis about contemporary Chinese women s’ poetry. The focus was on definitions, models, and developments of poetry written by Chinese women writers starting from the ‘80ies. The analysis of their poetry aims to identify shared features in their artistic growth, in particular, the passage from a writing which emphasizes gender awareness, typical of their previous works, to a literary style more focused on language experiments.

2015 - 2015
Substitute Teacher of ItalianI gave lessons of Italian language and literature to classes of 20 adults at elementary and intermediate levels twice a week. I also provided supervision and support to students for their MA and BA theses and presentations.
2013 - 2014
Foreign Language TeacherI gave lessons on Comparative Literature in English and Chinese to classes of over 30 students. I created and organised a semester course focused on some aspects of Western Culture such as celebrations, gastronomy, the Education system, in order to deepen their knowledge of European life and society.
2011 - 2012
Italian TeacherI gave lesson of Italian for the University Department of Foreign Languages.
2010 - 2011
Italian Teacher and TutorI was hired by the Italian organisation Uni-Italia which promotes Italian Education in China.
I gave lessons of Italian language and culture at Nanjing Normal University. I promoted the Italian culture in China, building contacts with both Chinese and Italian Institutes, and presenting Italian Universities at Education fairs and conferences in China.
2008 - 2010
Mandarin Interpreter and TranslatorI worked as Mandarin Interpreter for the University and the Confucius Institute of Naples at conferences, events and festivals.
I was one of the organisers of the first edition of the cultural festival “Milleunacina”. I was responsible for logistics: rooms setup, reservations, decorations, as well as coordinating artists for readings, exhibitions and conferences. I also introduced Chinese literature as a panelist of the festival.

Valeria adapts the lesson according to one's level. Being a polyglot herself, she understands the difficulty for one when learning a new language so she would find the best way to explain and the best format to teach. She also diversifies the learning materials from reading comprehension, listening comprehension, speaking, writing, etc. She is always fast in responding to my questions and correcting my homework. With her pleasant personality and attentive character, I would recommend her to anyone trying to learn italian.

I always appreciate it when teachers push me gently and firmly with interesting topics. Valeria does just that. Sometimes the topic’s about practical stuff. Sometimes, like today, we delved into the subjects of philosophy and its usefulness in life. Besides discussing such topics, she asks me questions to get me to come up with more complex responses.
