Do you know about the origins of your language? In this post I am going to talk briefly about the origins of my language, Pashto/ Pashtu or Pukhto. There are two contending theories regarding the origins of Pashto. One theory suggests that Pashto is basically a Jewish language. They support this idea with historical and religious traditions from the Bible suggesting that Pashtuns are a lost tribe of Jews. The second theory argues that Pashto belongs to the Indo-European branch of languages. Linguistic studies of Pashto in 19th and 20th century supports this view. Tell me about your languages too!
