Hello everyone! As part of my short series on British history for more advanced learners, here is another short insight. In today’s world, where underground transport systems are a normal part of daily life, it is easy to forget that this idea had to begin somewhere… The World’s First Underground Railway (1863) In 1863, London became the first city in the world to open an underground railway. The line, which ran between Paddington and Farringdon, was built to reduce the severe traffic congestion on the city’s streets. Constructing a railway beneath a busy city was a major engineering challenge. Large sections of road had to be dug up and then covered again after the tracks were laid - a method known as “cut and cover.” Perhaps most surprisingly, the first underground trains were powered by steam. This meant that the tunnels were often filled with smoke, making journeys uncomfortable for passengers. Despite this, the railway was an immediate success, carrying tens of thousands of people each day. Over time, the system expanded and improved, eventually becoming the modern network we know today as the London Underground. The creation of the underground railway reminds us that many aspects of modern life begin as bold - and sometimes imperfect - experiments.

Hi everyone! As part of my short reading series, here’s another simple text to help you practise your English. As always, there are some questions at the end for you to think about. Trying Something New A few weeks ago, John decided to try something new. He had always wanted to learn how to cook, but he often felt too busy or unsure where to start. One evening, he found a simple recipe online for shepherd's pie and decided to give it a try. At first, he made a few mistakes. He forgot some ingredients and cooked the food for too long. However, he didn’t give up. The next day, he tried again. This time, he followed the recipe more carefully and took his time. The result was much better, and he felt proud of himself. Now, John cooks several times a week. He says that trying something new was not as difficult as he expected, and it has become something he really enjoys. Do you enjoy cooking? Is there an English dish you would like to try? Comprehension Questions 1. What did John want to learn? 2. Why did he not start earlier? 3. What mistakes did he make the first time? 4. What did he do differently the second time? 5. How does he feel about cooking now? If you enjoyed this, feel free to share your answers or get in touch if you’d like to practise together 🙂
