The old woman answered, “Do you think cats that have meals/eat with mice can guard my kitchen well?" We said nothing but laughed (Makes sense and is perhaps acceptable but I don’t think it’s quite correct. In my opinion, whatever follows “nothing but” should be able to follow “we said”. Maybe I’m wrong, I’m no expert. I’d say, “We just laughed” or “We only laughed.”). I hope Ding Ding will (forever) have a happy life (forever) (unnecessary IMO but this is how you’d say it) with her new owner, and I hope Ding Ding is working hard and will never be fired.
