8 words with the root -НАДЕЖ- (hope) to make your Russian more advanced

🇷🇺 «Я дома» and «Я в доме» look almost identical… but they don’t mean the same thing! 🏠 Я ДОМА. → I’m at home. Here, дома means your home as a general place — where you live, your “base.” — Где ты? — Я дома. → Where are you? → I’m at home. But… 🚪 Я В ДОМЕ. → I’m inside the house. Here, you’re talking about your physical location inside a building. For example: — Ты во дворе? — Нет, я в доме. → Are you in the yard? → No, I’m inside the house. 💡 Think of it this way: ДОМА = at home 🏠 В ДОМЕ = inside the house 🚪 And yes — you can technically be дома, while sitting in your garden or standing outside your front door. 😄

Did you know? In Russian, рабо́та (work) comes from the same root as раб (slave) 😳 The root -РАБ- carried the idea of hard, forced labour and it grew into рабо́тать (to work), рабо́тодатель (employer), and even ро́бот (robot). Does "work" have any surprising relatives in your language?

One thing I’ve noticed after teaching Russian for a while… The hardest question for some students isn’t “What does this word mean?” It’s “Okay… but what do I say now?” 😭 For example you meet a Russian person for the first time. They ask: Откуда ты? Чем ты занимаешься? Ты давно учишь русский? Почему ты учишь русский? You understand every single word. But then you have to answer… and suddenly you forget how to speak Russian. Does this happen to you too? 👀 What Russian question makes you think “oh no, what am I supposed to say?” For me, it’s probably «Расскажи немного о себе». And honestly, even as a native speaker, I find this question surprisingly difficult. Like… what exactly am I supposed to tell you? 🫠
