After food itself, this is the highest-frequency vocabulary in daily Kerala life. The vegetables, spices, oils and dairy on a Kerala shopping list, including the gourds, tubers and two kinds of onion that a European kitchen will not recognise. Then the shopping sentences in the order you will actually use them, the one question that marks you as somebody who knows what to ask, and the different kinds of shop, from the old provisions store to the weekly market. Words and phrases in this class: ചെറിയ ഉള്ളി (cheriya ulli) – shallot (small onion) സവാള (savaala) – large onion വെളുത്തുള്ളി (veluthulli) – garlic ഇഞ്ചി (inchi) – ginger വെണ്ടയ്ക്ക (vendaykka) – okra പാവയ്ക്ക (paavaykka) – bitter gourd കൂർക്ക (koorkka) – Chinese potato വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ (velichenna) – coconut oil കിലോ എത്ര?
