The grammar V-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다 is used to express ability, possibility, or permission.
-ㄹ 수 있다: This is used when someone has the ability or when something is possible.
-ㄹ 수 없다: This is used when someone lacks the ability or when something is impossible.
It is similar to "can/can't" in English.
How to Use It
1. If the verb stem ends with a vowel or ‘ㄹ’
Rule: Verb stem + ㄹ 수 있다/없다
Example:
가다 → 갈 수 있다
"I can go to Busan tomorrow." → 저는 내일 부산에 갈 수 있어요.
"I can't go to Busan tomorrow." → 저는 내일 부산에 갈 수 없어요.
2. If the verb stem ends with a consonant
Rule: Verb stem + 을 수 있다/없다
Example:
먹다 → 먹을 수 있다
"I can eat spicy food." → 매운 음식을 먹을 수 있어요.
"I can't eat spicy food." → 매운 음식을 먹을 수 없어요.
Example
-ㄹ 수 있다
When ability or possibility exists
"I can play the piano." → 피아노를 칠 수 있어요.
-ㄹ 수 없다
When ability or possibility is absent
"I can't drive a car." → 차를 운전할 수 없어요.
Example
"I __________ swimming."
(Ability: "I can swim." → 수영을 할 수 있어요)
(Inability: "I can't swim." → 수영을 할 수 없어요)
Complete the Sentence: Provide students with a verb and situation, asking them to complete the sentence using V-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다.
(Question 나는 매운 음식을 ______________.)
볼 수 있어요.
먹을 수 있어요.
만질 수 있어요.
읽을 수 있어요.
