When is katakana used to write words that are typically written in hiragana? From what I have seen it can be used for emphasis. I was reading the lyrics of a song and they write "ソレ” instead of "それ”. The full line reads "歪なソレが美しく見えたんだ " Is this just done for emphasis? Or is it for readability? Or some other reason?

It is an emphasize. The reasons for using katakana are as follows. 1)."to make it look like an distinguished/independent instance,", 2)."to liberate it from the meaning of kanji" In this case, it is 1). For details, please refer to https://www.italki.com/question/449576
