"Teacher I´m stressed out, teacher I´m burned out ... " - "Students I´m freaking out" I ristk to repeat myself but I´m again fed up with students behavior. I have to add that I´m talking about german (a least the most) students in a medical school, that means they are between 18 and 26. Young, healthy peoply on the peak of their cognitive performance but less robust than ever. Of course it´s my personal point of view and not an evident research. But did we forget that there are two types of stress? We need stress, our cells and body systems need to be challenged, We tend to blame stress to cause deseases like heart attacs, depressions skin problems and so much more. But it feels like we create the stress we might experience by things like procrastination or simply the overuse of the word "stress" They are not standing with one foot in the grave because of an unexpectedly test, they will not be loony because of studying a lot, it´s the opposite. We are able to grow because of suche situations and by the way, what´s the idea later in an operation room with an sudden emergency? Are they going to tell the team "sorry folks this ist too much for me I´ll have a break"? I wonder who it treating whom in the end? Will the patient take the docer´s hand and say "It will be fine"? I don´t want to overlook that young peoples´ live is complicated in a other way like we experienced in a youth with less digital content. But I don´t want, that we underrate the benefits of good stress and the amazing feeling of success after passing stressful times.

"Teacher I´m stressed out!" "Teacher I´m burned out ... " "Students, I´m freaking out!!" At risk of repeating myself I am again fed up with my students' behavior. I have to add that I am talking about the mostly German students in the medical school where I teach. These medical students are between 18 and 26 years of age. They are young, healthy people at the peak of their cognitive performance, but yet they far less robust than previous generations. Of course, this is my personal opinion and not a conclusion from research. Have people forgotten that there are different kinds of stress? We need positive stress - our cells and body systems need to be challenged to achieve. Currently, as a society, we tend to blame stress for conditions like heart attacks, depression, skin issues etc.. But it feels like we create more stress than we actually experience, through behaviors like procrastination or even simply overuse of the word "stress". My students act like the appearance of an unexpected test is going to kill them, or that they will go crazy due from studying too much. Quite the opposite; people grow due in such situations. By the way, what will they do when there is a sudden emergency in an operating room? Are they going to tell the team, "Sorry, folks, this is too much for me, I´ll have to take a break"? I wonder who will be treating whom in the end? Will the patient take the doctor´s hand and say "It'll be fine"? I don´t want to dismiss that young peoples' lives are complicated in way unlike the lives of young people of my generation before social media was prevalent. But, I don´t want them to underrate the benefits of "good stress" and the amazing feeling of success after working through it.
Perhaps Europe should adopt the American system of undergraduate liberal arts and then medical school afterward. I think there could be more travel and work related experience to breed greater maturity during the education process as well.
