It is a popular belief that consumer goods play an important role in our daily lives. However, when we are asked about whether consumer goods, such as refrigerators or washing machines, are beneficial, it seems that people hold divergent(1) views.

(1) I wouldn't say that "divergent" is completely wrong, but it's not quite right and an unusual word to use here. "People hold different / differing / varying / contrasting views" would be better. Good job. Really well written.
