My son has started going to a Spanish immersion pre-school. I’m trying to do my part at home by speaking to him the best I can as Spanish is not my first language. We live in Texas so Mexican Spanish has a big influence here. I’d like to know how to say:
Snack
Lunchbox
In a way that would probably be used most in my region or in Mexico. I have heard “bocadillo” and “merienda” for snack but not sure which one is more common and if “merienda” is dated or is set-in-stone specific to a snack eaten in the afternoon. And is Lunchbox really “Caja de almuerzo” or is Google Translate just doing a horrible job???
Thanks!

snack:
I'm sure that in Texas snack is also used when they speak in spanish, but a good translation can be "merienda" or "refrigerio". In some countries in sudamérica we call it also "recreo".
lunchbox:
In Spain the translation would be "friambrera" but in latinamérica we call it "lonchera".

Our friend "Google Translator" did an horrible job with "caja de desayuno". Yes, María Renée is right, in Spain we say "fiambrera".
In Spain we usually call "merienda" to the whole meal and the most famous piece of food of this meal is the "bocadillo". Over time we got used to say "la hora del bocadillo" to refer to this meal time. It can be at 9-10 AM or at 17-18 PM.
Saludos a Texas!

even on some countries the term "snack" is used to refer to a small meal between the mains, but the direct translations is "bocadillo", lunchbox is "lonchera".

Lunchbox in Spanish is "lonchera"; "Merienda" is what is inside.
