Talking About Children in Malayalam — Part 3: Questions, Commands and Praise | Learn Malayalam #147
Descrição
In a Malayali family or neighbourhood, a very large share of all conversation is about children.
You get the words for the child, from കുട്ടി and കുഞ്ഞ് to മകൻ, മകൾ and മക്കൾ, and the questions every parent is asked: how many children, how old, which class, and above all, did the child eat? Then the plain commands you use with children, the polite forms you must switch to with elders, and മിടുക്കൻ, the praise that lights up a child's face. It ends with how Kerala raises children communally, with grandparents often the main carers.
