Could anyone help me with the following question?
“They went out together for seven months before he proposed to her in 1961.”
Why is it used “went out together” instead of “had gone out together”? Hasn’t the action represented in “went out together” completed before “he proposed”?

How long have you been ....... here?
A. lived
B. living
1. He did much to help the homeless.
2. He did nothing to help the homeless.
Do both " to help the homeless" function as an adverbial of purpose? Or the first does, but the second functions as an attributive?
两个句子中的不定式短语都是目的状语吗?还是说第一个是,而第二个是后置定语?
