Class 30. The proficiency roadmap — what an examiner is actually listening for, and how to climb one band. Even if you never sit an exam, this is worth your time: the criteria examiners use are simply an honest description of what fluent speech sounds like. Train for the exam and you get the fluency anyway. THE ROUTE The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview. Two Malayalam assessments exist — the OPI, a live 20-30 minute conversation with a certified tester, and the WPT, an online writing test of four tasks taking about 80 minutes. THREE FACTS THAT SHOULD CHANGE HOW YOU PREPARE 1. There is no pass or fail. You receive a rating on a fixed scale in two to three weeks. The question is never "did I pass" — it is "what band did I hold". 2. The interview is ADAPTIVE. The tester keeps raising difficulty until you can no longer sustain the task. Your floor sets your rating, not your ceiling. One brilliant sentence does not make you Advanced. Consistency does. 3. Topics are deliberately unpredictable — which is why task rotation, not topic memorisation, is the correct training method. WHAT IS ACTUALLY SCORED Function (can you do the task — narrate, complain, persuade), text type (words, sentences, or connected paragraphs), context, content, and accuracy. Burn this in: function weighs roughly three times as much as accuracy. A grammatically perfect answer that dodges the task scores lower than a flawed answer that does the job. THE LADDER, IN MALAYALAM TERMS Novice — memorised phrases, heavy English mixing, single-word answers. Intermediate Low/Mid — your own sentences, familiar topics, errors, occasional English when stuck. Intermediate High — paragraph-level speech, പിന്നെ, പക്ഷേ, കാരണം, അതുകൊണ്ട് used naturally; you talk AROUND a missing word instead of switching to English. Advanced — sustained paragraphs in all time frames, opinions defended with evidence, rare English. Superior — hypothetical argument and abstract discussion. Taught by Dr. Reshmi R Nair.
