Walk through Kerala and you walk past a building tradition that solved a specific set of problems — extreme rain, high humidity, heat, timber abundance, laterite soil — and solved them so well that the solutions are still visible in buildings put up last year. THE HOUSE നാലുകെട്ട് the nalukettu — four blocks around a central open courtyard നടുമുറ്റം the middle yard, and the whole idea: open to the sky, it lets light and air into the centre of a deep building, drains the rain, and creates a stack effect that pulls hot air up and out. A house that breathes through its middle is not decoration. It is engineering. എട്ടുകെട്ട് two courtyards · പതിനാറുകെട്ട് four courtyards, the houses of the very wealthiest പൂമുഖം the front porch, the reception space. A visitor who is not family is received here; whether you get past it is a measure of the relationship. The architecture encodes the stages of a Kerala friendship. ചാരുപടി the sloping wooden backrest along the veranda edge where people sit and watch the road. If you are offered a seat on it, sit. അറ the innermost room — the store, and the safest space വടക്കിനി, തെക്കിനി, കിഴക്കിനി, പടിഞ്ഞാറ്റി the north, south, east and west blocks, each with conventional functions വാസ്തുശാസ്ത്രം the architectural tradition behind the orientation, with Kerala's own texts — the most famous being the Manushyalaya Chandrika — and hereditary craftsmen, the ആശാരി THE ROOF Steeply pitched and overhanging far beyond the walls: the pitch sheds water fast, the overhang keeps rain off the wall and plinth. Thatched with ഓല, coconut frond, or tiled with ഓട്, terracotta. The gable grille, മുഖപ്പ്, is not decoration alone — it ventilates the roof space. The whole structure is jointed timber, historically often assembled without nails. THE MATERIALS ചെങ്കല്ല് laterite — reddish, iron-rich, soft enough to cut with a spade when freshly quarried and hardening on exposure to air. Almost every traditional wall in Kerala. Cheap, local, and it breathes. തടി timber · ഓട് roof tile · കുമ്മായം lime plaster · കോൺക്രീറ്റ് concrete THE MODERN STORY, TOLD HONESTLY What Kerala mostly builds now is the concrete house with a flat or shallow roof, strong colours, often much larger than the family needs. In climate terms it is worse: concrete stores heat, flat roofs pond water in a three-thousand-millimetre monsoon, small windows and enclosed plans do not ventilate, and the whole thing needs air conditioning in a climate where the traditional house did not. That was Laurie Baker's argument — the English-born architect who spent most of his life in Kerala, built in exposed brick and laterite, used jali screens and filler slabs, reused materials, followed the contours rather than levelling them, and built very cheaply.
