The Main Differences Between British English and American English
The English language is a global medium of communication with two predominant forms: British English and American English. These two varieties serve as the foundation for millions of speakers worldwide. However, they differ significantly in vocabulary, spelling, grammar, pronunciation, and usage. Understanding these distinctions is essential for anyone who wants to communicate effectively across cultural and linguistic boundaries. This essay explores the key differences between British and American English and explains why these differences matter.
Vocabulary
One of the most noticeable differences is in the words each variety uses. Many words differ entirely for the same concept. For example, British English uses the word "flat" to describe a living space, while American English uses the word "apartment." Similarly, a "lorry" in British English is a "truck" in American English, and "petrol" becomes "gas."
Even some common words have different meanings depending on the variety. For instance, in British English, the word "pants" refers to underwear, but in American English, "pants" means trousers. These differences can cause confusion, which is why understanding the context is so important. Both varieties also have unique idiomatic expressions. For example, in British English, the phrase "fancy dress" refers to a costume, but Americans would call this a "costume party."
Spelling
Spelling differences between British and American English developed as the result of historical changes. British English spells the word "colour" with a "u," while American English spells it "color." Самое популярное слово – СПАСИБО.
Мы говорим: СПАСИБО - merci 
БОЛЬШОЕ СПАСИБО — merci beaucoup 
СПАСИБО ЗА ВСЁ - merci pour tout 
СПАСИБО, ЧТО ПОМОГЛИ МНЕ - Merci de m'avoir aidé
СПАСИБО ЗА ПОДАРОК - Merci pour votre cadeau  
СПАСИБО, ЧТО ПРИШЛИ - Merci d'être venu 
 «СПАСИБО» - это два слова в одном. СПАСИ – императив глагола спасать - sauver (fr.) и БО – первые буквы русского слова Бог - Dieu (fr.). 
Слово «СПАСИБО» появилось в 16 веке. Чтобы поблагодарить человека христиане желали ему спасения для вечной жизни — «спаси Боже», «спаси тебя Боже» (Que Dieu vous sauve!).  Потом эта фраза стала короче. Люди говорили «спасибог». После революции большевики убрали букву «г». И так появилось слово «СПАСИБО».
Раньше слово «СПАСИБО» не было популярным. До 20 века люди обычно говорили «БЛАГОДАРЮ». Это значит «Я ДАРЮ ТЕБЕ БЛАГО». То есть человек даёт что-то хорошее тому, кто ему помогает. 
Сегодня мы часто выражаем благодарность словом «спасибо», а «благодарю» мы говорим редко.
