When Things Break By Themselves — Malayalam Passives and Blame | Learn Malayalam #108
Описание
If a glass breaks, whose fault is it? This sounds like grammar. It is actually about culture.
English decides immediately. English says: I broke the glass. Subject, verb, object. Somebody did it, and the sentence names them.
Malayalam does not have to decide.
ഗ്ലാസ് ഉടഞ്ഞു (glass udanju) — the glass broke. It broke. No agent. Nobody named.
And if you DO want to name yourself:
ഞാൻ ഗ്ലാസ് ഉടച്ചു (njaan glass udachu) — I broke the glass.
Two different verbs for the same event, depending on whether a person is in the picture:
ഉടയുക (udayuka) — to break, by itself
ഉടയ്ക്കുക (udaykkuka) — to break something, deliberately, with an agent
Say them: ഉടഞ്ഞു (udanju) · ഉടച്ചു (udachu).
And this is not one isolated pair. It is a system, and it runs through the whole verb vocabulary. Malayalam gives you a built-in way to describe an event without assigning blame — which is why it can sound so much gentler than English in exactly the moments that matter.
In this class:
• The full set of by-itself / did-it-deliberately verb pairs
• How to report an accident without accusing anybody, including yourself
• When naming the agent is the polite choice and when it is the aggressive one
• Why this is the grammar behind a great deal of Kerala social tact
