Directness: When Imperatives Are Polite — "Come, Sit", "Tell Me" and the Warmth in the Tone | Understanding Indian English #111
Описание
Many visitors are surprised by how often Indian English speakers use plain imperatives: "Come, sit." "Have some more." "Tell me." "Do one thing, send me the file." "Give me two minutes." To a listener used to softened requests like "Would you like to sit down?" or "Could you possibly send me the file?", these can sound blunt or even bossy. In fact, research on Indian English politeness and corpus studies of requests show that imperatives are a normal, warm and polite form in many contexts, especially invitations, offers and requests between people who know each other, and that politeness is often carried by tone, address terms like "sir", "ji" or "yaar", softeners like "please", "just" and "na", and the relationship itself rather than by long conditional phrasing.
What you will learn:
• Imperatives as invitations
• Imperatives as requests at work
• Where the politeness lives
• "Do one thing" and other frames
• When imperatives can sound strong
• Responding naturally
• Practice: decode the scene
• Listening strategies
• Self-check questions to test your ear
Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes.
