When you are ill in another language, your vocabulary shrinks just as accuracy starts to matter most. This class builds everything on one frame: എനിക്ക് plus the symptom plus ഉണ്ട്, literally 'to me there is head-pain'. You get the pain words built on വേദന, the common symptoms, the sentences to say at the door, the questions a doctor will ask so you can recognise them by ear, and the pharmacy instructions, where നേരം counts the doses. There is also one piece of advice that may matter more than any word: carry your medical facts written down. Words and phrases in this class: എനിക്ക് തലവേദനയുണ്ട് (enikku thalavedanayundu) – I have a headache എനിക്ക് വയറുവേദനയുണ്ട് (enikku vayaruvedanayundu) – I have a stomach ache എനിക്ക് പനിയുണ്ട് (enikku paniyundu) – I have a fever എനിക്ക് ചുമയുണ്ട് (enikku chumayundu) – I have a cough തലകറക്കം (thalakarakkam) – dizziness ക്ഷീണം (ksheenam) – weakness, tiredness എനിക്ക് സുഖമില്ല (enikku sukhamilla) – I am not well എനിക്ക് ഡോക്ടറെ കാണണം (enikku doctare kaananam) – I need to see a doctor അടുത്ത് ആശുപത്രിയുണ്ടോ? (aduthu aashupathriyundo?) – is there a hospital nearby? എവിടെയാണ് വേദന? (evideyaanu vedana?) – where does it hurt? എന്തെങ്കിലും അലർജിയുണ്ടോ? (enthenkilum alarjiyundo?) – do you have any allergy? ഭക്ഷണത്തിന് ശേഷം (bhakshanathinu shesham) – after food ദിവസം രണ്ട് നേരം (divasam randu neram) – twice a day In this class: • The dative frame: എനിക്ക് + symptom + ഉണ്ട് • Pain words built on വേദന, and the common symptoms • What you say at the door, and what the doctor will ask • Medicine, the pharmacy and counting doses with നേരം Quizzes below.
