Thirty-six consonants, and the first twenty-five sit in a five-by-five grid that is not alphabetical order. It is a map of your mouth. This audio companion to Script Class 2 walks the varga table from the back of the throat to the lips. Each row is one place in the mouth; each column adds breath, voice or nasality. Every letter comes with a word. You meet the retroflex and dental rows that English merges, the eleven consonants outside the grid, and the two that make Malayalam sound like Malayalam, ഴ and റ. Words and phrases in this class: കല (kala) – art ഖനി (khani) – a mine ഗജം (gajam) – elephant മാങ്ങ (maanga) – mango ചക്ക (chakka) – jackfruit ഞാൻ (njaan) – I പെട്ടി (petti) – a box കണ്ണ് (kannu) – eye തല (thala) – head നായ (naaya) – dog ഭയം (bhayam) – fear മഴ (mazha) – rain മുറ്റം (muttam) – courtyard In this class: • The varga grid: five places in the mouth, five manners • The retroflex row English lacks, next to the dental row • The eleven consonants outside the grid • ഴ and റ, and why a doubled റ reads as tt Quizzes below.
