Class 40. Can, may, must, might — the whole modal drawer, and the one divide that decides whether you sound warm or cold. English does modals with odd little helper verbs that refuse to conjugate. Malayalam does them with regular endings. But the real prize here is not the list — it is one distinction running down the middle of the system, and getting it wrong is how a kind person accidentally sounds cold. ABILITY Infinitive + an ability verb, and the subject is ALWAYS dative — because ability, like emotion, is something you have, not something you do. എനിക്ക് ചെയ്യാൻ കഴിയും — I can do it · എനിക്ക് ചെയ്യാൻ കഴിയില്ല — I cannot. എനിക്ക് അത് ചെയ്യാൻ പറ്റും — colloquial · അവന് ഇപ്പോൾ വരാൻ പറ്റില്ല — he can't come right now. Two things make this easier than it looks. The past is its own short form — കഴിഞ്ഞു was able to, കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല was not able to. And present equals future: എനിക്ക് കഴിയും covers both "I can" and "I will be able to". A time word sorts it out. Register: കഴിയും is neutral to formal. പറ്റും and പറ്റില്ല are what you actually hear in shops, kitchens and phone calls. Reach for പറ്റും in real life — and retire the stiff textbook കഴിയുവാൻ സാധ്യമല്ല. Nobody says that. PERMISSION, OFFERS AND "LET'S" — the suffix -ആം Its meaning shifts with the subject, and the shifts are completely regular: ഞാൻ വരാം — I'll come (an OFFER, willingness) എനിക്ക് വരാം — I can come (ABILITY, availability) അവന് പോകാം — he may go (permission) നമുക്ക് പോകാം — let's go THE DISTINCTION ALMOST NO COURSE TEACHES ഞാൻ വരാം is willingness. എനിക്ക് വരാം is availability. Same suffix, different case, completely different message. One is a promise; the other is a schedule check. **If a friend invites you to their wedding and you answer എനിക്ക് വരാം, you have told them your diary is free. You have not told them you are coming.** And -ആം plus -ഒ gives ചെയ്യാമോ, the warmest everyday request in Malayalam. Taught by Dr. Reshmi R Nair.
