The Two I's — ഞാൻ vs എനിക്ക്, and Feelings That Happen to You | Learn Malayalam #8
Описание
This class has the single most useful idea in beginner Malayalam: there are two words for I.
ഞാൻ is for what you do. എനിക്ക് is for what happens to you: hunger, wanting, knowing, liking, fear, tiredness and having. You will drill the split until it becomes a reflex, see why Spanish, Hindi, Russian and Icelandic share it, and then learn ആയി, 'became', the form behind എനിക്ക് ഇഷ്ടമായി (I liked it), the most useful compliment in Malayalam.
Words and phrases in this class:
ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു (njaan pokunnu) – I am going
എനിക്ക് വിശക്കുന്നു (enikku vishakkunnu) – I am hungry
എനിക്ക് ദാഹിക്കുന്നു (enikku daahikkunnu) – I am thirsty
എനിക്ക് അറിയാം (enikku ariyaam) – I know
എനിക്ക് അറിയില്ല (enikku ariyilla) – I don't know
എനിക്ക് പേടിയാണ് (enikku pediyaanu) – I am afraid
എനിക്ക് ക്ഷീണമുണ്ട് (enikku ksheenamundu) – I am tired
