This class teaches nothing new. It makes you retrieve what you learned, which is how it stays. It starts with Ebbinghaus and the forgetting curve: retrieving half-forgotten material is what makes it stick. Then comes a countdown drill in three sections. The sounds: the three R's, the two L's, vowel length and fast-speech reductions. The origins: Dravidian roots, the split from Tamil, everyday and Sanskrit word pairs, and round letters. The machine room: case endings, the dative, six forms of one verb, the quotative, connectors and negation. Answer aloud before each countdown ends. Words and phrases in this class: മഴ (mazha) – rain മല (mala) – mountain മാല (maala) – necklace മുടി (mudi) – hair മൂടി (moodi) – lid വെള്ളം (vellam) – water (everyday word) ജലം (jalam) – water (Sanskrit word) വീട്ടിലേക്ക് (veettilekku) – to the house എനിക്ക് വിശക്കുന്നു (enikku vishakkunnu) – I am hungry എനിക്ക് അറിയില്ല (enikku ariyilla) – I do not know മഴ പെയ്താലും ഞാൻ വരും (mazha peythaalum njaan varum) – even if it rains, I will come അവൻ ഒന്നും പറയാതെ പോയി (avan onnum parayaathe poyi) – he left without saying anything ഇത് എന്റെ വീട് അല്ല (ithu ente veedu alla) – this is not my house In this class: • Why spaced retrieval beats cramming: the forgetting curve • Sounds: R, L, vowel length and the three reduction rules • Origins: Dravidian roots, the split from Tamil, and why the letters are round • The machine room: cases, the dative, verb forms, connectors and negation Quizzes below.
