We use borrow and lend when people share objects or possessions. 

We use borrow to explain we don’t own the object. 
For example: I am borrowing a dress from my sister.
We use lend to explain that the object belongs to you, but someone is using it.
For example: I am lending my dress to my sister.

Switzerland has a problem, and it needs your help.

Between 1918 and 1964, lots of military ammunition was thrown into lakes around the country. At the time, it was believed to be a safe way to dispose of it.

And it wasn't a small amount, either. According to a government press release, about 8,000 metric tons of ammunition lies underwater, mostly in three lakes: Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and parts of Lake Lucerne.

Some of the ammunition lies as deep as 220 meters, and some is just a few meters deep.

Now, the country needs help getting it out, and it's offering a prize of about $58,000 for the best ideas.

Getting the ammunition out won't be easy — although it has been underwater for a long time, the risk of explosion is still high. Some of it weighs up to 50 kilograms, and the water visibility is poor in many parts of the lakes.

Some of the ammunition has components that can pollute the water and soil if moved, so the government is also looking for ideas that are environmentally friendly.

The competition to find the best idea is open now, and will run until February 2025. The three best ideas will be announced in April next year, and the winners will share the $58,000 prize.

The government said this doesn't mean the ideas will be implemented immediately, but said they could help with future research on the issue of underwater ammunition.

こんばんは！
Japanese daily life podcast のAtsushiです。
このPodcastは、日本語を勉強しているみなさんに向けたPodcastです。

ずっと海外旅行シリーズが続いているんですが、他の話もいろいろあるので、今回は違う話にしようと思います。

今日、英語のテストを受けてきました！という話ですね。
帰ってきたところなので、本当にさっき受けてきたんです。

今回受けたテストは、TOEICテスト、というものを受けてきました。日本では結構メジャーなんですが、他の国の人はみんなが知っているわけではない、という感じです。

TOEICは、日本で発案されたプログラムのようです。
1979年にはじまり、今では日本の企業や学校、個人による受験が増え、2021年度で年間約212万の人が受けています。

そして、このTOEICプログラムは他の国にも広がっていて、東南アジアやヨーロッパ、中南米などにも運営機関が設置され、世界160ヵ国、約14,000団体が受けてるような規模になっています。

このTOEICテストはいくつかの種類のテストがありますが、今回、僕が受けたテストだけ紹介します。

今回受けたのは、listening & reading test です。
990点満点のスコア評価で、マークシート方式のテストです。

listeningが45分、readingが75分、それぞれ100問ずつの合計200問あります。

このテストの特徴は、自分の英語能力がどれぐらいか知りたい時や、就職活動の時に自分の英語能力のレベルを表現する為などに受ける人が多いと思います。

僕は海外移住がしたいので、どこに行くにも英語は必要ですね。ほぼ毎日勉強していますが、どれぐらい身についているか、できるようになっているか、感覚的にしかわからないので、今回受けてみました。

結果は3週間後ぐらいにオンラインで確認できるみたいです。公式認定証official score certificate も発送されるようです。

600点を目指していたんですが、結果はどうなっているのか、ドキドキしています。良い結果かわからないので、Podcastで話すかわかりませんが、良い結果なら話そうかな、と思います。

個人的な感想としては、テストみたいな機会を作ることは良いなと思いました。それに向けて必死にがんばるので、ただ勉強しているよりはこの期間で確実に文法について理解は深まったと思います。でもこれがテストのためだけになるんじゃなくて、スピーキングにつながるようにしないといけないですね。
