6月21日は、一年で一番昼が長い日「夏至（げし）」でした。東京では夜の7時ごろまで明るいですが、私がヨーロッパへ行った時、夜の9時を過ぎてもまだ明るいのでびっくりしました。日本に比べて、ヨーロッパの夏は本当に昼が長いですね。これからは少しずつ昼の時間が短くなっていきますが、夏は始まったばかりです。あなたの住んでいるところでは、今、何時ごろまで明るいですか？

6月21日（ろくがつにじゅういちにち）は、一（いち）年（ねん）で一番（いちばん）昼（ひる）が長（なが）い日（ひ）「夏至（げし）」でした。東京（とうきょう）では夜（よる）の7時（じ）ごろまで明（あか）るいですが、私（わたし）がヨーロッパへ行（い）った時（とき）、夜（よる）の9時（じ）を過（す）ぎてもまだ明（あか）るいのでびっくりしました。日本（にほん）に比（くら）べて、ヨーロッパの夏（なつ）は本当（ほんとう）に昼（ひる）が長（なが）いですね。これからは少（すこ）しずつ昼（ひる）の時間（じかん）が短（みじか）くなっていきますが、夏（なつ）は始（はじ）まったばかりです。あなたの住（す）んでいるところでは、今（いま）、何時（なんじ）ごろまで明（あか）るいですか？

【English】 
June 21st was "Geshi," the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. In Tokyo, it stays bright until around 7 PM, but when I went to Europe, I was surprised that it was still bright even after 9 PM. Compared to Japan, summer days in Europe are truly long. From now on, the daylight hours will gradually become shorter, but summer has only just begun. What time does it stay bright until where you live now?

【Vocabulary】 
夏至（げし）：Summer Solstice 
過ぎる（すぎる）：To pass / To exceed 
びっくりする：To be surprised 
～に比べて（にくらべて）：Compared with... 
～ていく：To go on changing 
始まる（はじまる）：To begin 
住む（すむ）：To live 
明るい（あかるい）：Bright

【Grammar Notes】 
🔶 Verb (te-form) + も：Even if / Even though 
Example : 
忙（いそが）しくても、毎日（まいにち）日本語（にほんご）を勉強（べんきょう）します。 
Even if I am busy, I study Japanese every day.

🔶 Noun + に or と + 比べて（くらべて）：Compared to... 
Example: 
日本(にほん)に比（くら）べて、ヨーロッパは昼（ひる）が長（なが）いです。 
Compared to Japan, daylight in Europe is long.
バスと比（くら）べて、新幹線（しんかんせん）のほうが速（はや）いです。 
Compared to the bus, the Shinkansen is faster.

🔶 Verb (te-form) + いく：To go on changing 
Example: 
これから、日（ひ）が短（みじか）くなっていきます。 
From now on, the days will get shorter. 
日本語（にほんご）の勉強（べんきょう）は、これからもっと難（むずか）しくなっていきます。 Japanese studies will go on becoming more difficult from now on.

🔶 Verb (ta-form) + ばかり：Have just done... 
Example: 
夏（なつ）が始（はじ）まったばかりです。 
Summer has only just begun.
さっき、お昼ご飯（おひるごはん）を食（た）べたばかりです。 
I have only just finished lunch a moment ago.
