Start, Keep, Let and Try: Thudangi, Konde Irunnu, Sammathikku, Nokku | Spoken Malayalam #116
Описание
English puts little helper words in front of the action: start cooking, keep talking, let him sleep, try this, stop crying. English speakers translate straight across and put the helper first, saying ഞാൻ തുടങ്ങി പഠിക്കാൻ (njaan thudangi padikkaan). In Malayalam the action comes first and the helper verb comes last, like a tail: ഞാൻ പഠിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി (njaan padikkaan thudangi) = I started studying, literally "I, to-study, started".
In this episode:
• Start: the -aan form plus thudangi
• Keep on doing: -konde irikkuka
• Let and allow: -atte, vidu and sammathikkuka
• Try: past form plus nokku
• Finish and stop: kazhinju and nirthu
• An invented scene: homework time
• Language bridge
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
