Recently, my cousin Satomi called me. She said she needs my and my family's official seals (stamps) to change the ownership of land, which was co-owned by her deceased father and grandmother, to her name. I didn't understand why our seals were needed for her to inherit her parent's land. Satomi was also confused. So, I gave her my father and sister's phone numbers. Satomi had hired a legal professional called a judicial scrivener, who would contact us for help. I wondered if I had any rights to the inheritance. I was also worried about how to gather the official seals and certificates from my estranged father and sister, who don't understand legal matters. Later, the judicial scrivener explained that the land had become complicated because Satomi's father hadn't changed the ownership to himself after his mother (my grandmother) passed away. Since my grandmother was alive, the inheritance rights that would have gone to my deceased mother now required the official seals and certificates from my father, sister, and me. The scrivener wanted to meet with my father and me, but I preferred to handle it by mail. The scrivener planned to visit my father's house to explain the situation. Last Wednesday, after many attempts to contact him, the scrivener visited my father, explained the situation, and offered to cover additional costs like the seal purchase, certificate fees, and transportation. My father agreed to help, which relieved me since I was worried about having to collect these documents myself. This situation made me realize how complex legal procedures can be, even for something as simple as changing land ownership. It made me wonder what I should do if my husband or father passed away.
