Progressing even a single step nearer to this evasive objective is of greater consequence than idly watching time elapse."

I still believe I have reserves of willpower to rise like a phoenix again to master the interview. I know I have faced failures in all nine (successive) attempts. What avails? Nothing if you don't try . It is better to get one step closer to this fleeting aim than to see the time (simply) passing. 'Crack' the interview could work on a technical level. But it's a different kind of jargon than your other words, more informal. 'In turn' could go at the end of the sentence. It doesn't really add anything here though.
