Mostly you can use it same way. This is my point of view, so there may be a more specific situation and a better explanation. This is what I found out after making a lot of examples myself. I hope it helps you. 절반 is noun form of dividing things in half. And 반 is just a noun, half. So we generally really don't focus on how to use it in correct way. *You can use it both way. 1. 반으로 자르자. (Let's cut in half.) 2. 절반으로 자르자. (Let's cut in half.) When you use 절반, it sounds like more perfect half than 반. *You can use it both way. (50% number of people in a group) 1. 학생들 중 절반이 숙제를 안 했어요. (Half of students didn't do homework.) 2. 학생들 중 반이 숙제를 안 했어요. (Half of students didn't do homework.) 1. 클럽의 절반이 남자야. (Half of the club members are men.) 2. 클럽의 반이 남자야. (Half of the club members are men.) You can't use counters such as 잔, 개, 병 etc after 절반. 1. 소주 반 잔만 주세요.(Give me half a glass of soju) 2. 소주 절반 잔만 주세요.(X)
