In a casual gathering, two people talk about different subjects. She leads the conversation and he just follows her. Everything is going well, until she starts to make malicious questions to him, because she knows how to make people uncomfortable. He tries to balk on her, but she keeps pushing him away. He’s so polite that he spares all of sort of answering that can offends her, he just simpers as he has little to not smart comments crossing his minds. He just wants to clam up but his manners prevents it. He thinks "this girl is a such of nuisance", but quickly he takes a look to the empty wine bottle next to her, and realizes how some people mess everything up.

Great text, the words you used are challenging. I don’t understand where you wrote “balk at,” in the same context, I might use “connect with, keep a conversation with.”
