Film-review “Good luck to you, Leo Grande” I am not a cinema-goer. I have
developed a special theory explaining why I don’t enjoy watching films. I think
that it’s the fault of my mirror neurons; while watching films I feel
overwhelmingly nervous about the future of the protagonists to the point that it is not pleasurable,
but rather a real torture. So I prefer not to watch films, and do so only on
special occasions. However, I heard about a new film with Emma Thompson, called “Good
luck to you, Leo Grande”, which opens with a rather sensitive topic: the sensual life of
middle-aged women. The protagonist of the film, Emma Thompson, in a leading role,
is a retired teacher of Religious Education who lost her husband prematurely two years ago. Having had two children, she has never enjoyed
her sensual life, and so after months or maybe years of hesitation, she decided to
try to change this situation with the help of a professional. So the film consists
of scenes of meetings between the main heroine and Leo Grande; sometimes awkward,
sometimes tender, then again confusing, but always thought-provoking. The main
spoiler to the film is that the heroine gains what she wants through radical
changes in her character and way of thinking. Emma Thompson is really a very
brave woman and actress, who I sincerely admire. She is very courageous to be
filmed naked in all her 63 years, and not try to hide the imperfections of her body.
Not all young supermodels would be ready to show their bodies so sincerely
without help of Photoshop or other modern applications. But Emma Thompson has
done just that to persuade women all over the world that they are attractive
however old they are. This is very generous act, I think. Although the film
is a little naïve, it raises important topics and I can recommend watching it
to all women older than thirty years, as it encourages looking at yourself from
another point of view.
