I really suggest learning the Thai alphabet as soon as you can. The problem with romanisation is that even though you find it "easier" at the beginning, soon you will have to unlearn a lot of bad habits, misspelling and mispronunciation because you relied on the romanised phrases. If you don't dump romanisation as soon as possible, I think you'll stay stuck at beginner/tourist level.

The good news about Thai script is that it's very precise. It doesn't have the same amount of spelling/pronunciation exceptions that English does.  It's also far easier to search for Thai words in Thai script than trying to find the same romanised word.

You could kindly ask your teacher to use Thai script (I did!), even if it means spending a couple of lessons just getting your head around the alphabet. You'll thank yourself later.

I agree with Peachy 100%!  No sense learning a language without learning its writing system.  In every other language, we start with the alphabet, so why not Thai?  As soon as you know the alphabet, then you open many doors to learning opportunities.  Best advice : stay away from transliteration as much as possible, especially nowadays with audio available in every dictionary!  โชคดีนะครับ
