I don't think points can be used in any tangible way. They just show you have made some contributions to the Italki conmunity.

Some people have mentioned that other people's point counts can be helpful in selecting a language partner.
A guy who says "I'm looking for a hot chick to be my language partner," joined italki yesterday, and has only a few points is a probably less desirable partner than someone who says "Perhaps we can help each other improve our language skills," joined a few months ago, and has a large number of points.
